When you fall silent, all the winds grow still,
And twilight lays its shadows on the day;
I hear the ache your quiet cannot kill,
And feel the warmth of love begin to stray.
No blame remains upon your tender tongue,
No tears descend to plead for yesterday;
The words of love that once your heart had sung
Have faded like the last light into gray.
I once believed that love was holding tight,
That hands entwined must never part or flee;
Now I have learned love’s truest, gentlest light
Is letting go, though letting go breaks me.
Yet if one door within your heart remains,
I’ll cross the storm to heal what love sustains.
